Paintings
While undertaking my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree 1985-1989 at ILAM Art School in New Zealand (University of Canterbury), I majored in painting. Although I also now create mixed media, sculptural and textiles works, the formative years of my art education in painting have inspired me to think like a painter in just about everything I do as it offers a visual and embodied experience of developing image and idea in an experiential and experimental way. I have been able to adapt this structural, aesthetic and conceptual way of working to my work in film and media, developing teaching sites, resources and writing. This was part of a series of work I did while on artist in residence at Samuel Marsden College, Wellington in 2002, I was given permission to spend some of this time in the Katherine Mansfield Museum where I developed a series of paintings that collaged aspects of her narratives and place as I did mine.
